What does it mean to be simply satisfied? It seems we are always longing for something – something ELSE or something MORE. Something DIFFERENT than what we have or MORE of what we already have. You may be longing for SOMEONE ELSE to be in your life
Is it possible to ever be satisfied or content? It is on this very point, that Paul states that he has “learned to be content whatever the circumstances” (Philippians 4:11). He goes on to state that he has “learned the SECRET of being content in ANY and EVERY situation, whether fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want” (4:12). REALLY? What is the SECRET? Paul states that his secret is “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (4:13).
I can’t give you a 3-step process to satisfaction, because that wouldn’t work! Satisfaction only comes to those who trust in God’s strength. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest or your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).
It does take some effort and in that sense it isn’t easy. When you feel a longing for something or someone, instead of indulging yourself in food, sex, alcohol, drugs, shopping, video games, sports, television, the internet, or anything else… simply talk to God and ask Him to satisfy you.
“I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall lack nothing. Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. He satisfies my desires with good things, so that my youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing…those who hop in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Jesus answered, ‘…whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst…I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.’ He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things” (Psalm 18:1,2; 23:1; 37:4; 63:3-5; 103:5; 107:8,9; 145:16; Isaiah 40:31; Matthew5:6; John 4:14; 6:35; Romans 8:32 NIV).
